In 2024, Deepinder Goyal said Mother's Day had become Zomato's biggest order day ever, ahead of New Year's Eve. He noted that in a country full of festivals, it was Mother's Day that took the cake.
In 2026, Swiggy had the bigger one.
Swiggy's orders on May 10 ran 20.5% above its average Sunday that month. Zomato's ran 16.5% above. A year earlier the positions were exactly reversed: Zomato at 21.0%, Swiggy at 15.0%. Both platforms still see a real Mother's Day effect. The advantage moved.

Bakery and dessert is where the day is actually won. Cake shops, bakeries, and ice cream brands on Swiggy did 3.26 times a normal Sunday's orders on May 10. On Zomato the same segment did 2.52 times. Against platform-wide lifts of 1.21x and 1.17x, dessert is running at roughly triple the whole-platform effect. Bakingo alone tripled its Sunday volume on Swiggy.
The year-on-year movement in that segment mirrors the platform result precisely. Swiggy's dessert lift climbed from 2.52x in 2025 to 3.26x in 2026. Zomato's fell from 2.99x to 2.52x. Each platform took the other's number.

Basket sizes moved in opposite directions. Zomato's Mother's Day AOV came in near INR 490 against a Sunday baseline of INR 480. Swiggy's landed at INR 470 against a baseline of INR 490. Inside dessert the gap widens: Zomato averaged INR 490 on the day versus INR 470 on a normal Sunday, while Swiggy's dessert basket fell from INR 460 to INR 420. Swiggy pulled more dessert orders at smaller ticket sizes. Zomato pulled fewer at larger ones.
For a bakery or dessert brand, the operational read is straightforward: a single Sunday in May generates three times normal demand, and the platform where that demand concentrates is not fixed year to year. For a QSR chain outside the dessert category, Mother's Day is a mild Sunday uplift and little more. The day belongs to cake.
