India's ecommerce market is constantly evolving, and the skincare industry is no exception. In December 2022, Nykaa, the most popular destination for cosmetics and beauty products in India, saw a range of top skincare products fly off its virtual shelves. Leading the pack were Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, known for its gentle yet effective formula, and Ponds Super Light Gel Oil Free Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid + Vitamin E, a fan favorite for its lightweight and nourishing formula.
The Ordinary, a newer brand on the scene, made a strong showing with its Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution and Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%. These products, known for their high quality and affordability, have quickly gained a devoted following. Vegan and cruelty-free brand Plum also made the list with their BodyLovin’ Vanilla Vibes Body Oil, a favorite among those looking for natural and nourishing skincare options.
Makeup brand Maybelline may be best known for their cosmetics, but they also offer a range of skincare products, including their highly-rated Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner. MCaffeine, a unique brand that infuses caffeine into their products, saw their Exfoliating Coffee Scrub make the top seller list. Neutrogena, a trusted name in skincare and sun protection, had their Ultrasheer SPF 50+ w/ Helioplex included in the top sellers. The Derma Co, a newer brand on the market, made the list with their 1% Hyaluronic Sunscreen Aqua Gel. And rounding out the top sellers was Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water Pink, a go-to for gentle and effective cleansing.
But where are all these products being purchased? According to research, the North Zone leads the pack in skincare product purchases on Nykaa, with almost double the amount bought compared to the South and West Zones. The East Zone lags behind, coming in at about 50% of the South and West Zones' skincare product purchases.
Average basket sizes for skincare products on Nykaa range from 1700-2600 INR. And interestingly, skincare product purchases tend to be lower on the weekends, bucking the trend of increased online shopping on weekends for products like food delivery and ride hailing.
