Electronic & Mobiles: Platform Preference by Gender
Overall the Indian ecommerce market skews in favour of males about two-thirds male-to-female. A Google study titled "Towards Gender Equity Online", released in April 2019 says four key factors hobble the presence of women online — access, content and community, privacy and safety.
Below, we give some Vumonic data showing the gender split between platforms for the Electronics and Mobile category. Significant is the delta between Amazon and Flipkart:
Value-wise, Online Electronic and Mobile sales is the largest contributor to overall ecommerce value sales. We analysed more than 60K Electronic and Mobiles items sold on these platforms from the period of April to Sept 2021 and it is interesting to note that the gender wise preferences are quite different – Amazon has a clear lead amongst Females.
As time goes on, we expect ecommerce to balance itself out more female thru diversity programs like Amazon's "Saheli" initiative, which works to increase product range for women. This will help Amazon further secure its spot as the top ecommerce shop in India.
