Electronic & Mobiles: Platform Preference by Age

According to estimates, Indian e-commerce will reach US$112 Billion in GMV by FY25, growing at a 29% CAGR over FY20-25E. As per Vumonic Datalab’s intelligence nearly 50% value is generated by Mobiles & Electronics category.

Analysing platform preference by user age is meaningful for platforms to pick up key target groups and sharpen their communication focus. Also, it's super useful to understand the differences between brand A and brand B. Is one more catered to older age groups? Overall, the younger age groups -- Less than 25 yrs & 25 to 35 yrs -- are the largest battlefield, as they contribute more than 85% of value and volume in the electronics and mobiles category.  

Valuewise, Online Electronic and Mobile sales is the largest contributor to overall ecommerce value sales. We analysed more than 75K Electronic and Mobiles items sold on these platforms from the period of April to Sept 2021 and it is interesting to note that Flipkart has pressed on advantage amongst the young age groups compared to Amazon.

Flipkart has gained strategic advantage among youth with higher marketing spends, keeping consistent positioning and coming up with quirky fun advertising campaigns.
