Delicious Deliveries: A Look at December’s Food Delivery Trends

As the leading market intelligence company in India, Vumonic is always on the lookout for the latest trends in the ecommerce and food delivery sectors. And when it comes to food delivery, two companies stand out as the biggest players in the game: Zomato and Swiggy.

In December, we found that the average order size for Swiggy was 400 INR and for Zomato it was 425 INR. But what were people ordering? The most popular items on both platforms were butter naan, roti, chapati, chicken biryani, chicken fried rice, masala dosa, and Parotta. It's clear that Indian cuisine is a crowd-pleaser when it comes to food delivery.

When it comes to popular restaurants, both Zomato and Swiggy had a lot of overlap. McDonald's, Domino's, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut, La Pinos Pizza, Subway, Faasos, The Belgian Waffle Co, and Oven Story were all among the top choices for customers. It's no surprise that these well-known fast food chains are in high demand, but it's worth noting that Oven Story, a popular pizza chain, is a standout among the crowd.

We can't disclose the exact marketshare numbers, but it's worth mentioning that Swiggy seems to be leading the pack in most major food delivery markets by a margin.

Finally, we took a look at the daywise order volume on both platforms and found that Sundays are a major spike in order volume, with a 30% increase above the baseline. And on New Year's Eve, the volume was a whopping 2X the baseline! It's clear that people love to indulge in some delicious food delivery, especially during special occasions.

So, what does this data tell us about the state of food delivery in India? It seems that Indian cuisine is a favorite among customers, and well-known fast food chains continue to be in high demand. But what about smaller, lesser-known restaurants? How do they compare in terms of popularity and marketshare? And how can these trends inform the strategies of food delivery companies and restaurants looking to expand their reach in the Indian market? These are the questions that Vumonic is here to help answer 🙂
